The tragic loss of Deputy Andrew Peery has rocked the southern Colorado law enforcement community.
Deputy Peery was shot in the line of duty on Sunday evening after responding to a shooting on Ponderosa Drive from safety.
Pueblo Police Chief Chris Noeller said upon hearing the news, he was devastated.
“On the one hand, my heart is broken for the friends and family of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department”
Chief Noeller says it affected him because he grew up in the area where the incident happened and went to Widefield High School.
“I’ve driven these streets, I know exactly where the incident happened, I have friends and family who live and work in this area as law enforcement officers, and I have friends at the Fountain Police Department, so it was heartbreaking.”
Having close ties to the area and being in the line of duty, Chief Noeller felt the impact of this incident, but he notes that the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is experiencing something he does not. could not understand himself.
“It’s just tragic to have to deal with this, I can’t imagine what Sheriff Elder is going through, my heart aches for him.”
It reminded him of the dangers law enforcement personnel face when responding to calls.
“It’s probably different for everyone, but it makes us think about the serious consequences of what we do and the impact on friends and family.”
To the other deputies, as well as his wife Megan and their two children, Chief Noeller sends his condolences on behalf of the Pueblo Police Department
“I just want to say our hearts are with you, we are behind you and we are so sorry for your loss.”
The Pueblo Police Department hopes to send an honor guard and get involved in efforts to honor the deceased deputy, but they are awaiting word from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
